The ostrich is an unusual bird as it's the world's largest bird and cannot fly. They live on African savanna's and desert lands getting most of their water from the plants they eat. To compensate for their inability to fly, ostriches are strong runners able to sprint up to 43 miles an hour and run over distance at 31 miles an hour. They may use their wings as 'rudders' to help them change direction while running. Their long powerful legs can cover 10 to 16 feet in a single stride. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw which can be used as weapons capable of killing a human or a potential predator such as a lion.
Unlike the majority of photos here, this one is not a native species. While I prefer native plants and animals I also visit commercial zoos as I did when I took this photo. What I like most about this photo is the outstanding eyelashes.
