The Little Blue Heron is a medium-sized heron with a long pale blue bill that’s light at the base and darker at the tip. Adults have a purplish head and neck that contrast with its blue body. Immature Little Blue Heron’s are white in their first year looking very similar to Snowy Egrets which as of similar size and characteristics. When young they often show splotches of gray-blue by their first spring.
Because of its dark purple-maroon plumage and lack of long plumes, this Little Blue wasn't a major target for the plume hunters that decimated the populations of most of the white egrets and herons in the late 1800s. During the 20th century, Little Blue Heron has extended its range northward and increased in population in many areas. Said to be wary and hard to approach I've found quite the opposite to be true and have had them walk within a few feet of me as I sit quietly nearby.
